Trip Leaders

Dr. Bricker

Jerry Bricker, Biology Professor & Trip Coordinator
A botanist, Jerry has extensive field experience throughout the Americas and Africa. For over two decades he has led groups to Honduras, Belize, Minnesota, and Wyoming where he has introduced students to ecology and environmental biology.  Growing up in Michigan, Bricker spent many days with a canoe paddle in his hands.  His longest trek to date was a nearly 600 mile paddle on the Missouri River in 2011.  Bricker's interests also include ethnobotany and human uses of native plants.  Bricker has received Wilderness First Aid training.

Cindy Marolf

Cindy Marolf, Biology Professor
Cindy has spent most of the last 28 years teaching Human Anatomy and Physiology at NWU with brief stints teaching general biology and various labs. For the last 14 years, she has also served as the pre-health advisor for Wesleyan.

Along with husband Dick, her four children (who are now grown), and the family dog, she has spent many nights in a tent on vacations! More recently, she and Dick have enjoyed backpacking trips in Rocky Mountain National Park with friends and family. Her other loves including horses, gardening, fitness, and traveling.

Chelsi Marolf

Chelsi Marolf, Adult Leader
Chelsi graduated from NWU in May of 2016 with a degree in Biology and has plans on pursuing a career in research and/or academia. She is from Nebraska but loves to explore wilderness areas, national parks, etc. Originally a student on the BWCAW trip in 2012, she cannot wait to return, even if it means spending time with Dr. Bricker! She'll be ready with paddle in one hand and freeze dried mocha mousse pie in the other.

Gina Chambers

Gina Chambers, Professor of Sport Management
Gina, a 1997 biology alumnae, has continued teaching at Nebraska Wesleyan for the past 20 years. She currently advises the sport management majors in the Health and Human Performance department. Gina also leads groups of NWU students to Haiti for medical trips, orphanage work, construction, and sports camps. She is married to Bren Chambers who was a biology major, as well. They have four daughters ages 7-16 and a multitude of pets. The Chambers family keeps busy with sporting activities, fitness, traveling, and helping serve at an equine therapy riding academy near Firth, NE.

Taylor Jo Grandstaff

Taylor Grandstaff, AWS Student Instructor
Taylor, a Combination Music Education major at NWU, is originally from Fremont, Nebraska. She first went to the Boundary Waters as a student in the 2015 AWS class and is excited to return to the backcountry. Taylor will lend her passion for the music of the wilderness to the many class discussions and papers we'll have during the fall semester.

Aly Johnson
Aly Johnson, Student Leader
Aly is a junior Biology major from Lincoln, Nebraska.  She's mildly addicted to all things outdoors whether camping in subzero temperatures, mountain climbing in record highs, or napping in her backyard and wishing there was a cologne that glorified grass. In 2016, her love of the wilderness took her to Oregon to work for the Forest Service and to the Boundary Waters as a student leader.  Incoming students, get psyched for wild berry picking, Hudson Bay Bread day, and crazy amazing portaging.
